For Lewis Pointe, Thornton's Holiday Season Is Mostly a Drive South. Here's How to Plan It.

Lewis Pointe is 373 single-family homes in Thornton's north end, around East 140th to 144th Avenues off Holly Street. The city's holiday events are clustered far from here. WinterFest is at Carpenter Park on 112th. Día de los Muertos is on 96th. The Nutcracker program, the senior veterans' lunch and the history exhibit are all on Colorado Boulevard, Eppinger Boulevard or Dorothy Boulevard. On the numbered-avenue grid, that's 30 to 45 avenues south of home.

So from Lewis Pointe, the dates that shape the season start well before the events do, and four of the five on the list below come before Thanksgiving. Everything else is either a short trip up Holly Street or a drive you can plan once and do well.

The dates to put on the fridge first

Here's the order things open, as listed on the City of Thornton's event pages for 2026:

  1. Friday, Oct. 23. Reservations open for the Veterans' Lunch and Entertainment for ages 55+. Reservations are required, and veterans eat free.
  2. Sunday, Nov. 1. Día de los Muertos, noon to 5 p.m. No sign-up needed.
  3. Wednesday, Nov. 11. The city's Winter-Spring activity guide is due out. Watch for it if you're planning around winter break. The city calendar also lists Nov. 11 as a holiday closure.
  4. Monday, Nov. 16. Registration opens for Sensory-Friendly Santa Visits on Dec. 11. The city says space is limited.
  5. Friday, Dec. 11. WinterFest opens, and the Village holiday lights switch on at 6:30 p.m.

Oct. 23 and Nov. 16 are registration openings. If someone in your house wants a seat at either event, those two windows set the schedule for the rest of the season.

What stays close: Trail Winds on Holly Street

Trail Winds Recreation Center at 13495 Holly St. is the closest city rec center to Lewis Pointe. Over the holidays, it's where a lot of north-end weeknights happen. Before you plan around it, check the holiday hours:

Date Trail Winds hours
Thursday, Nov. 26, Thanksgiving 8 a.m. to noon
Thursday, Dec. 24 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Friday, Dec. 25 Closed
Thursday, Dec. 31 5 a.m. to 3 p.m.

If your family's Thanksgiving morning plan is the pool, keep in mind the August 16 to December 19 pool schedule says Thanksgiving week runs on a special schedule, and it doesn't list those hours yet. Open swim there means all pools, the hot tub and the slides, with no lap lanes. Call the front desk before you pack the swim bag.

The climbing wall is a good option on short December evenings. Winter drop-in hours are Monday through Wednesday and Friday from 5 to 8 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Thursdays are classes only, and the wall is closed Sundays.

Trail Winds also has one holiday event of its own. Holiday Carol-oke is Friday, Dec. 4, from 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. It's part of the city's AIR Friday Fun Night series, an inclusive monthly social night for adults of all abilities, including people with physical or cognitive disabilities, ages 16 and up. The fee is $7 for residents and $8.50 for nonresidents and includes a snack and a drink.

If you'd like to walk with neighbors, the fall-winter guide lists a Nov. 7 community walk starting from the Starbucks at 11995 Holly St. The Dec. 12 walk starts at Carpenter Recreation Center, back down south.

The I-25 side: new stops at Larkridge and The Orchard

Head west on 144th instead of south on Holly, and the two shopping centers along I-25 have both added new places.

At Larkridge, Handel's Ice Cream is one of the newer arrivals. The Northglenn-Thornton Sentinel reported that it sits near Village Inn and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Those were the hours at opening, so check before a cold-weather cone run. Larkridge also lists Bricks and Minifigs as "Opening Winter 2026," with no exact date yet. WinCo Foods and Texas Roadhouse are listed for 2027, so neither is part of this season.

The Orchard Town Center lists Texas de Brazil and Donutsville as now open. Grandrabbit's Toy Shoppe, MilkShake Factory, Dakota London and Cardinal Family Chiropractic are marked coming soon. So far, neither Larkridge nor The Orchard has given a date for its new toy shop.

The Orchard's own holiday kickoff is still an open question. Last year's Winterfest there, with Santa's arrival and a tree lighting, was Nov. 15, 2025. The center's events calendar currently lists only October dates. Until it posts a 2026 date, don't count on last year's.

The drives worth making before WinterFest

Each of these is south, and each is a single trip you can plan around:

Día de los Muertos, Sunday, Nov. 1, noon to 5 p.m., at McAllister Park Center, 750 W 96th Ave. It's free, with live entertainment, food trucks, an artisan market, a decorative altar, face painting and educational activities. Of all the trips here, this one is farthest south and west, so make it an afternoon.

Veterans' Lunch and Entertainment, Thursday, Nov. 5, noon to 1 p.m., at the Active Adult Center, 11181 Colorado Blvd., for ages 55 and up. Veterans eat free and reservations are required.

70th Anniversary History Exhibit, free, weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Thornton Arts & Culture Center Annex, 9211 Dorothy Blvd. The OZ Gallery next door at 9209 Dorothy Blvd. is free and lists open hours from noon to 5 p.m. on Nov. 24 and Dec. 8.

Zikr Dance Ensemble: Nutcracker in a Nutshell, Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2 to 3 p.m., at Thornton Community Center, 2211 Eppinger Blvd. It's a free, one-hour, all-ages show in nine scenes, narrated by the ensemble's artistic director. Dec. 8 is also an OZ Gallery open day on Dorothy Boulevard, so one weekday afternoon covers the gallery, the history annex and the Nutcracker.

WinterFest weekend from the north end

Thornton WinterFest runs Dec. 11 to 13 at Carpenter Park Fields, 11000 Colorado Blvd.: Friday 6:30 to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday 5 to 9 p.m. When home is up near 144th, the trip itself is part of the plan. Saturday is the only full day, and it's the day most of the scheduled events land:

  1. 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. Breakfast with Santa at the Active Adult Center, 11181 Colorado Blvd. It's $6 for ages 13 to 61 and $4 for ages 0 to 12 and 62+, no registration needed. Free photos are taken on your own phone.
  2. 10:10 and 10:15 a.m. The WinterFest Fun Run/Walk and chip-timed 5K at Carpenter Park, with a collectible finisher mug for every registration.
  3. 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mini-train rides. The Holiday Marketplace runs in Santa's Village Event Tent from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  4. 4 to 8 p.m. Children's carnival games.
  5. 7 to 8:30 p.m. The Thornton Community Band Holiday Concert in the Event Tent, then holiday fireworks set to music at 8:30 p.m.

Skating on the Village Pond costs $2 for kids 12 and under and seniors 60 and over, and $3 for ages 13 to 59. Skates are available at the skate shack, or bring your own. Members of Dazzling Ice do ice-carving demonstrations all weekend.

The Santa line has two rules that matter if you're driving in. Numbers are handed out 15 minutes before each visit window, and the line closes once they're gone. On Saturday, the windows are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., 2 to 5 p.m., and 6 to 8:30 p.m. The city also notes photo services are no longer available, so bring your own camera. Arriving a little before a window opens beats arriving right on time.

Friday night is the shorter option. Santa arrives at 6:30 p.m. to help Mayor Kulmann and City Council flip the switch on the Village lights, and the Thornton Community Chorus sings at 7 p.m. Earlier that evening, Sensory-Friendly Santa Visits run from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Active Adult Center, which is why the Nov. 16 registration date is near the top of the fridge list.

North Thornton is home base for my work, and the drive down Holly Street to Carpenter Park is part of every December up here.
